This is still my favorite magazine cover of all time. I find it utterly mesmerizing.

Reading the bottom line, perhaps it was laced with nanites….

Cover scan posted with permission from the fantastic photographer, Bart Nagel, former Art Brute for Mondo2000.

  1. Weird to see him listed as T. Caraghessen Boyle, not "T.C. Boyle".

Yeah, I remember that cover. That was before the dot com boom. Yikes.

  2. 1994 I think.

Looking at the ads, I realize now, in retrospect, that I have purchased several of the obscure music CDs highlighted in this issue. We even had D’Cückoo play at one of our events, with their big inflated MIDI trigger ball bouncing over the dance floor.

How about Siberry? Strangely, the nanites did not steer me to buy her music. Any particular songs to recommend?

  3. Holy Retro! (CUE: "The Way We Were")

  4. I have this issue. Used to read them all cover-to-cover. It is a great photo, too.

  5. That picture of you by Bart is superb, if I were you I´d ask him for permission to post that one here. Thank you for the pointer to his site. I found that he was the creator of Sergey and Larry´s great corp. pictures. And I hadn´t seen this one before. My God… wow.

Btw, my ol´avatar has some similarity to this photo… something in the pose. Not in the beauty, obviously. +)

  6. I also remember seeing D’Cückoo play at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. You really can’t forget that midi ball.

I always liked Siberry’s When I Was a Boy from around this time. The song "Calling All Angels" is on that album, which Wim Wenders used on his soundtrack for Until the End of the World.

  7. Wow. I loved this cover too. I think I have several thousand copies of Mondo 2000s in storage somewhere. Maybe time to dig them up.

  8. reminds me a lot of the scene in Dark City where Jennifer Connelly sings Sway (Anita Kelsey).

    fyi, soundtrack is here

  9. Bart Nagel!! He did a photo illustration for Salon when I was working as an Art Director there that made me smile, Clinton naked with a flag, like that picture of Nastassja Kinski with the snake…

Jane Siberry: I was obsessed with The Walking in high school.

  10. siberry is awesome…great cover

  11. I remember this cover. I’m sure I have this issue buried somewhere.

  12. Okay. I need to keep up on my comments more. Flickr needs a nice way to ping users like livejournal when somebody makes a comment on a comment.

Wow. I was just thinking about D’Cuckoo the other day. They did the music for one of my old company’s demo reels, (Xaos|tools).

Re: Siberry – I only know her songs from other people’s tracks. I think she was a voice on the track "Calling All Angels" on Wender’s "Until the End of the World".

She also did a song called, "Slow Tango" which is hypnotic but may also make you feel like recently suffered Enya-cide, i.e. death by New Age music.

  13. I have a black t-shirt with a big red X on it, and it says "Xaos|tools"

    Thanks!

  14. Aw man?!? That gets me all misty. Seriously. Once upon a time, Xaos was a cool company. Glad people enjoyed it.

  15. Hey, I still have a few issues of M2k! Those guys (and Wired) definitely pushed the conventional boundaries of magazine publishing in the early ’90s. I think I kept the first few years of Wired as well. I suppose they’ll be a bizarre novelty someday… Wait, I think they are already. 🙂

BTW, found you hiding in my mailbox today – congrats on the Red Herring cover story!

  16. Awwwwww I used to have this issue too. I miss it very much. That interview with jane/Issa was very inspiring to me.

  17. This is still a very modern looking design.
