Puzzle Series: What is this, or what do you want it to be? Clearly, I’ve got to make these things harder…

  1. There’re unconfirmed clues in Goo, counter top, or chemical luminencence as well.

  2. What if it were black goo on something glow in the dark.. Molassas over a glow in the dark frisbee, maybe?

  3. Is an aquarium, hot tub or swimming pool relative to the photo? It almost looks like a silhouette of a fish looking at the camera (if you hold your tongue right). But that doesn’t take into account the distance to the object being 174 ft. Is that part of the EXIF wrong or am I making a wrong assumption based on that?

  4. For the bolding, it might be helpful to revisit the "correct paragraph" from Rocketeer, above…

    and don’t forget the Estonian… 😉

  5. A swimming pool vacuum cleaning up sediment that was in your pool? (Trying to incorporate a "tube" into the answer)

  6. pool is the flickr pool, nothing else. 😉

  7. I guess that rules out the pool the turtle is in at the top right hand corner of this page.

Could it be as simple as a light stick (tube) being "spun" around in a 2 second exposure?

  8. Maybe he’s tracing his hand with a light stick, hmm, yeah.. Maybe two swipes of a light stick.. No trace of fingers though…

  9. A light stick rolling under his hand, maybe.

(BTW, I hope you’re planning for something obliquely apropriate for number 42… *grin*)

  10. I just modified my guess to include his latest clue… spun…

  11. DOH! A glowing frisbee? Spun Firefly etc… but Ben, you mentioned that already.

  12. And the shadow is still tough.. Unless it’s a hand on a frisbee, but if so, it’s not moving..

  13. OH, he’s got his back turned and twirling a light stick on a string in front of him, maybe?

Nah, too big an area to cover in 2 sec.

  14. "What we have here is a chart showing the aftermath of a major earth quake leaving only the LP of Michigan as the remaining land mass in the Mid West" set to the voice of Ross Perot running for President… 😉

Ah well, glad to know MI is safe for now, g’night all!

  15. *snicker* Giant grating sound! Hi Kristi, welcome to the party!

  16. “Could it be as simple as a light stick (tube) being "spun" around in a 2 second exposure?”

Bingo Rocketeer, the reigning puzzle king! It’s just that simple! Whew!

I am twirling a green glow stick around like a cheerleader with a baton. The black area is my hand.

I guess that is pretty simple, compared to "cherenkov radiation in a reactor cooling pool" =)

Here is a short summary of the development of chemiluminescence and
    glow sticks:
“as long as there have been fireflies glowing in the dark, humans have been fascinated by "cold" light. The firefly’s glow mechanism, which hinges on the oxidation of firefly luciferin, is incredibly efficient — 80 out of 100 reacting molecules go on to produce a photon of light…
Ultimately, Rauhut designed a phenyl oxalate ester that, when mixed with hydrogen peroxide and a dye, gave a quantum yield of 5% — not as efficient as a firefly, but still brilliantly useful. They dubbed it Cyalume, and it became the trademark name for American Cyanamid’s chemical light products.”

    Welcome pwn4… an awesome guess.

"I guess that rules out the pool the turtle is in at the top right hand corner of this page." –> That dude is in the ocean, and in a flickr Set, not Pool. 😉

  17. Way to go Rocketeer! Good puzzle Steve!

  18. Ben- you got the glow stick first, but it was intact. It was the 2 second motion blur that was elusive. Now, I wish I had opened it while it was still glowing.

  19. A good collaborative effort! Was not Is is an interesting way to describe the motion. *grin*

So, we’re dieing to know. What was the difference between actual distance and the exif distance!

  20. Now I can go to sleep tonight knowing I don’t have to dwell on it for hours before nodding off.

Thanks for the help everyone. I couldn’t have guessed it without the help of everyone else.

Yes, what’s up with the distance to the subject in EXIF?

  21. Oh, btb, the stuff might be stinky… They mentionned esters in that cool explanation, which are usually pretty volatile, aren’t they?

  22. "Was not Is is an interesting way to describe the motion. *grin*"
    No comprende. Edit burp?

I think it was 1.73 feet. Maybe there was a missing decimal point. NASA has done worse. =)

It was an indoor shot, so if the sensor was at all accurate, it would have read 20 feet or so, if it missed me and caught the back wall.

  23. I wonder what the cameras focus on when they can’t get enough light.. It could be they settle on infinity.

Maybe quoted better, and explained it’ll make sense.

"Was not is" is an interesting way to describe motion. Refering to Alieness’s clue where you highlighted was and is. A very interestingly uniform color and brightness for such a random motion!

Oh, By the way, perfect amount of hint support.. We would have been lost without it, but plenty of brain power neccessary still.

  24. Oh, man! So Sorry!!!!! I can only bold my own text. That sneaky Alieness snuck in her own! I can see how that would be maddeningly misleading if you thought I was endorsing her boldface! Lesson to me. thanks.

  25. Oh, ah, yes, that’s right.. I thought there might be some settings that appear that I hadn’t seen.. Her bolding appeared after the initial post, didn’t it?

Ah well, that didn’t prevent me from jumpping to the right conclusion. Just added to the things I couldn’t quite fit in. *grin*

  26. That can set a puzzle rule: No guesser may use bolding. Only italic allowed.

  27. Oh well, just have to have clued in guessers! I shoulda known that he couldn’t edit your guesses, I’m thinking.

    Ah well, another day!
