Central prison yard in Khabarovsk, the Russian Far East. These 1913 facilities have accumulated some strange artifacts. The shaved youth are awaiting trial, a 6-9 month wait. Pre-trial and death row inmates are in the same facility. Solitary confinement is a “closet” shaped space (3×3 foot square on the ground). The prison guards had gone 3 months without pay.
A local entrepreneur escorted us, and she told us that we were the first Westerners to visit these facilities. Her business plan is to privatize the prisons in Russia.
