  1. Neat picture…

Welcome to the Trucks group, I have a picture (not that well done) of an old train in Yugoslavia in 1989, a train so ancient you would never see it in regular use in the west.

  2. And this ws taken recently? Amazing, it looks like a scene from decades ago. Lovely detail.

  3. Paul: it was from 1998. The Russian Far East seemed like a time warp…. I’ll see if I can find some other interesting photos of human resourcefulness (e.g., the common use of an abacus (lacking cash registers), an abandoned chemical plant turned into a sauna, and a technical university turned into an auto repair shop).

We had an unplanned landing in Anadyr to refuel on the trip out there. I came to understand why Alaskan Airlines has an engineer on each flight and why the planes are equipped with "off road" landing gear.

A huge smoke-belching truck towed us off the runway and up and over a grassy hill to get to the gas station.

  4. Great, just toss the spare tire in any old place.

  5. If you like to have another time warp to eternally old Russia, you should visit this site (maybe you heard about Elena already)

    Elena’s Motorcyle Ride through Chernobyl

Some images are really tough to see, I must warn you. But if you don´t mind that, the phototrip is unforgettable. And so its lesson.

  6. I’ve been to that website before, powerful stuff…

  7. indeed. now she seems to be (or have been recently) into another of her thoughtful adventures.

  8. …a number of folks have reported that Elina’s ride is a fraud. boingboing covered this a while ago.

  9. You know, it is a good thing that you let us know about this.

Talking about this… I am starting to get tired of the word "fraud". There it doesn´t say she didn´t make the trip or that she photoshoped the images, that, IMO, would have been a fraud. There should be a "This is a fraud" hunt about all this "This is a fraud" coverages… ah well…

Despite my opinion in general, please, thank you for the link. And happy holidays!
