  1. This picture is remarkable because it shows how, when the chunky, overwrought entablature of SF’s city hall is masked (in this case by a huge promotional banner), the beauty of the truly exceptional dome roughly doubles in visual impact. From wikipedia: Its dome, which owes much to Mansart’s Baroque dome of Les Invalides, Paris, is the fifth largest dome in the world, rising 307.5 feet (94 m). It is fourteen inches (35 cm) higher than the United States Capitol, and has a diameter of 66 feet). But this wonderful dome is largely unappreciated owing to a) the building’s large and relatively unnatractive lower courses, and 2) the building’s position in a low hollow (as opposed to a topographical rise) and 3) the many horrifyingly ugly 1970s vintage office monstrosities along Market street in the immediate background looking to the south.

For anyone who lives in SF and has not spent a few moments appreciating our great dome, well, I highly recommend it. The dome’s interior which is nearly always open to the public, is, IMHO, number 3 in the world (after Michaelangelo’s St Peter’s in Rome and Sir Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s in London). It should be a major tourist draw!
