The Moraine Lake is milky blue from the powdery rock in the glacial melt. For some reason, it seems to be glowing in this photo. Anyone seen an effect like that before? (Alberta, Canada)

  1. The Earth is so amazing. Wonderful photo!

  2. Thanks. Hey, this photo could be part of the yet to be formed illusion group.

  3. Here’s my shot from a different spot. It wasn’t nearly as ‘glowly’ when we were there, but I think that is a function of the angle of the sun and local atmospheric conditions. I have seen water as colorful as this though, in the pools of a basalt-rich river off the Colorado in the Grand Canyon.

  4. This lake sure is magical!
I just saw another photo of it.

  5. Wow..Great Lake..I was there in 2001..

  6. I could drink a case of (that) and still be on my feet. You said it, George.

great photo! Part of–near my–most favorite place on Earth…up and down the Icefields Parkway.

  7. Drink a case of the glow? It seems to have turned you light blue…

    long time exposure
    I guess…

    very impressive it is!

  9. OOP: strange thing is that it was a quick exposure (automatic setting in broad daylight). I was not trying to create an effect…

  10. spectacular photo!

I’ve seen spots like that on high alpine lakes in BC – on Garibaldi Lake from Panorama Ridge, for example.

    A most splendid effect.

  11. Yeah, the spectacular color is pretty common in silty lakes in BC. Gorgeous.

  12. This photo should be in a calendar or magazine… WOW!!

  29. I know this lake.

The only water I have seen similar to this was in northern Spain. The color was the same, but much less intense.

I have a shot of this lake on my site, and you can check it out. I can’t remember how to attach it here.

  31. I just LOVE Moraine Lake. It’s amazing. Very nice. It’s not a typical shot of Maraine Lake. Good one.

  32. Very nice! I would guess that the water has floating silt particles that reflect the sunlight. The darker areas of water are probably in the shadows of clouds.
