In the ocean near Kona.

“Dolphins have a massive new brain area, the paralimbic lobe, that we do not possess. The paralimbic lobe is an outgrowth of the cingulate gyrus, which is known to elaborate social communication and social emotions in all other mammals. Thus, dolphins may have social thoughts and feelings that we can only vaguely imagine.” (Steven Johnson, Mind Wide Open, p.225.)

A recent update: “Despite the divergent evolutionary paths of dolphins and primates — and their vastly different brains — both have developed similar high-level cognitive abilities” such as mirror self-recognition.

  1. That water color is just incredible. My wife and I saw a pod of spinner dolphins go by when we kayaked off South Kona. Were these dolphins swimming along with your boat?

  2. Yes. And they would jump up in the air spinning and playing. Several pods that would thrash about. About 20-30 dolphins in all….

  3. Very cool. Why are they swimming away from you, Steve? Did you accidentally say "Starkist" too loud or something?

Just kidding… they were probably near the bow of the boat riding the crest, werent’ they? I’ve seen only one or two at a time in Galveston Bay. Also, Galveston Bay looks like chocolate milk compared to this beautiful water… what a treat!

  4. Yeah, I was on the bow of the boat belting out the Celine Dion diddy from The Titanic, and they hate that song.

"Near, far, where ever you are…"

  5. LOL!

I’m sure you still sing better than me, but neither one of us looks good singing that song…

  6. They say that argentinian dolphins sing very well, btw…

  7. Yes… they are quite special.

Rocketeer: Chocolate milk??? That sounds nasty. Does it relate to this passage I read in Biomimicry today?

"In Iowa, up to six bushels of soil are washed out to sea for every bushel of corn produced."

  8. most wonderful moment indeed! Lovely in so many ways 🙂

  9. Oh man!!! I love dolphins… I swam with them in Mexico. They are heavenly creatures. They are so cool they would even endure you singing that god awful Celine Dion song to them 😀

  10. Dolphins off Kona eh! They are so cool! Did you get a chance to get in the water woith them Steve?

I have been blessed to live here and have often swum with the wild spinner dolphins. I have some photos of some of these times and your picture here has inspired me to post them…maybe today!
