After receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from Martine Rothblatt, Stamets proceeded to give a chilling talk on the H5N1 pandemic in the making, and then a hopeful talk on the cultural healing potential of psilocybin mushrooms.

• The gift of Agarikon
“Agarikon is one of the three longest living mushrooms known, sometimes living for over 100 years. The rings are annual growth rings." The gift to Martine on stage is 35 years old.

"Turkey tail and agarikon are anti-inflammatory. Agarikon has been used for over 2000 years for inflammation and “consumption” (TB). In a n=90 test with COVID vaccines, they appeared to prevent the adverse events that underlie 30% those who are avoid vaccines – vaccine hesitancy for fear of reacting to vaccination.

We made a surprising discovery 6 months later; the recipients had a much better immune response when taking Agarikon and Turkey tail mycelium at the time of vaccination with mRNA vaccines from Moderna or Pfizer. The addition of mushroom mycelium grown on rice decreased adverse reactions while increasing baseline immunity. Decoupling reactogenecity from immunogenicity has been a long-term problem with vaccines.”

• Psychedelics
“Yes, I use psilocybin mushrooms. Watson & Crick’s epiphany on the double helix of DNA and Kary Mullis’ invention of PCR happened on LSD. A collection of scientists have grand connected thoughts with psychedelics. The mind calms down and the universe speaks to you. The Stamets Stack was also an epiphany that came to me when tripping.”

“The psilocybe mushroom genome forked 65 million years ago, an interesting time. It has anti-snail, anti-slug properties; why didn’t all mushrooms evolve this? There are over 200 known psilocybin-containing mushroom species.”

“We’re all on the spectrum. Psychedelics help prevent us going into a disease state. With psilocybin, we are more creative. We are more kind. Once legal, it’s an opportunity to increase community intelligence.”

“Earlier today, I hit send to Random House of my 500 page book on psilocybin. Psilocybin has served as a bridge across cultures over the centuries.”

“I will end with something provocative. I am not responsible for the sins of my father. I barely knew him. I am responsible for the actions of my culture."
