For her birthday, I surprised my mom with an excursion to hike on a glacier, in Alaska. At 83, it was her first time in a helicopter, and she loved it.
The helicopter pilot told us it was a rare day to have no clouds or fog. My video compilation.
It’s hard to miss the water flows. A million gallons of Mendenhall glacier melt every 20 minutes. Just after our visit, a glacial dam burst, releasing 187K gallons of water per second, washing away houses in nearby Juneau. It was “a staggeringly high rate of flow that the FEMA had previously predicted had less than a 1% chance of happening” — news and video.
