“There’s no possible future in which we’re gonna slaughter animals. This is one of these like clear-as-day generalizations that I make about the future… like all vehicles will be electric, all vehicles will be autonomous, and we won’t slaughter animals for meat.”

Some reasons, from the Good Food Institute:

• Without alternative protein innovation, the Paris accord is impossible (Science)

• 22% percent of direct emissions come from animal agriculture

• As the world shifts toward renewable energy and electric vehicles while eating more and more meat (meat production is projected to double by 2050), the share of climate change attributable to the meat industry will grow.

• Eliminating emissions is scientifically impossible as long as methane from ruminants (~20x as powerful as CO2) and nitrous oxide from manure decomposition (~300x as powerful) continue. Meat is responsible for the plurality of methane globally — as much as oil and gas production combined.

• In addition to direct emissions, changing how we produce meat could free up three billion hectares of land – a land mass larger than China and India combined and then doubled. That land could be used for regenerative ranching, renewable energy production, ecosystem restoration, and more. (Our World in Data)

• Critical ecosystems are being destroyed to grow soy to feed to farm animals, mostly chickens and pigs. (Our World in Data)
