Oh, LEGO has my number! When I saw this retro Space-1979 page in the latest Xmas catalog, my jaw dropped… I remember that kit sooo well. It had all the cool spaceship parts!
In our youth, my cousin Leino and I built LEGO spaceships. My mom found my last custom build in an old storage box, having saved it for all these years. 9 of the 19 lights still work (repurposed from the incandescent Xmas tree mini-bulbs of the time that I threaded through holes in the LEGOs). A bank of dip-switches control the Apollo RCS engine lights, and a pair of more ergonomic buttons on the sides fire the laser cannons. One of the challenges was to leave enough internal routing space between the LEGO structures for all of the wires.
