The Impact of Ancient Iron from the Heavens

I am reading Greg Brennecka’s new book 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 which covers the impact meteorites have had on human culture. Iron before the iron-age left many a mark. So did observed airbursts overhead and craters on the ground. Meteoritic beads have been found in burial sites going back 6,000 years, and in King Tut’s tomb, along with his meteoritic rings and dagger.

Here are 4 of my ancient treasures that highlight stories from the book. Each photo caption has details on:

1) Diamond Diablo 💎 a 5mm diamond structure stronger than diamond embedded in a Canyon Diablo from Meteor Crater, Arizona. These meteorites have been known and used by pre-historic Native Americans, and collected and studied by the scientific community since the 19th century. Who knew… there are crystal healing placebos within.

2) Cha-Chinga! In Tibet, meteoritic iron has long been known as ‘namchang’ or ‘sky iron. An 11th-century carving of the Buddhist Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa came from the Chinga meteorite nearby.

3) The Gods Must be Crazy. A magnificent Henbury that has scared off the Aborginial peoples from the crater site for over 4,000 years.

4) The nickel-rich iron alloy that may have comprised some of the meteoritic treasure in King Tut’s tomb (dagger, ring and beads)… from an Egyptian crater discovered by satellite!
