Having watched the latest Spider-Man and Matrix, the contrast could not be more Stark. (no spoilers, please). They cost the same to produce, came out contemporaneously, and both had reason to reference characters from prior films. As a quantifiable point of comparison, I think that the reliance on a flashback is a failure of filmmaking.
And while it seems a little strange to say this about a Marvel movie, the acting was really good.
