The electrical grid is not coming to rural Africa in time. Like cell phones vs land lines, rural Africa can jump straight to the distributed/wireless future. We considered a microgrid, which can make a lot of sense in denser places, like India. But in the regions we were touring, the average farm is one acre, and installation cost is just too high across this patchwork. There were a few places that could support a microgrid, like the local marketplace. They were essentially serving as local watering holes for electricity; farmers would walk long distances to charge their cell phones.
