ASU is the PI for the Mastcam-Z, the primary science camera on NASA’s Perseverance rover. It’s 2MP, like the 2004 design freeze for Curiosity, but now it can zoom. Moore’s Law has made some pretty big advances in 16 years. Anyhoo, the new rover will take 38 core samples stored in metal test-tubes and left on the surface in clumps to be picked up by a series of future missions culminating in 2031.
