For #AsteroidDay, I’d like to give thanks to the asteroids, for without them, we would not have these lovely meteorites, little emissaries from the formation of our solar system and other cataclysmic events. And let’s give a shout out to our big boy Jupiter for throwing stones at us from the Asteroid Belt (via orbital resonances over millions of years ejecting astroids from the Kirkwood gaps).
Here are some celestial beauties from long ago and far, far away…… from our moon, Mars, Mercury or proto-planets smashed apart, and a very bizarre condensation of from our solar nebula 4.6 billon years ago. Yes, some of these rocks are older than Earth itself. And they contain materials not found on earth, like a magnetic graphite and crystalline metals that could only be formed in the vacuum and zero-g of space.
