On Memorial Day, I am reminded of the Cold War and the historic launch of Apollo 11 from Pad 39A at Cape Canaveral, cementing America’s dominance in the minds of many. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is perched there now, ready to strain against the hold-down clamps for a fiery leap into space and forward for humanity.

Here is the launch complex as imaged from space by orbiting Maxar satellite. I enhanced a bit to remove noise and sharpen the detail.

So many interesting details, like the future Starship landing pad (bottom left circle of cement) and launch pad under construction (the metal structure about 40% of the way from there to the Falcon 9 rocket).

And if you squint, it looks like the Millennium Falcon.

  1. and the wonder…. Looking down at Dad’s spaceship:
Former Astronaut Karen Nyberg, the wife of Astronaut Doug Hurley, takes a photo of their son looking down at Pad 39A

  2. Families of astronauts in the private sector get better treatment than govt. operated 😉 That is an amazing pic (the one of Hurley’s son looking down)…cover of Time-level actually. Wow. Tears.
