Down at SpaceX today.
My, how big they are! At hypersonic speeds, the upper atmosphere is like molasses, so four of these titanium fins near the top of the booster effectively guide and stabilize the return flight.

  1. Was once in a house back east where one of the kids had a glass topped table in an upstairs bedroom suite made from a 3x3x2 foot hexagonal carbon nuclear reactor core section from a US Navy submarine. The family was in defense contracting and the section had a defect that made it unusable (prior to initial installation)…so dad brought it home…They joked that it was a $20M coffee table. 😉

  2. Awesome to see one of the fins that close. Is the coffee table made from the titanium or aluminium version of the grid fins?

  3. Ti, unflown. Quite valuable 🙂

  4. I have the perfect accessory:
    Not-A-Coaster

  5. Is this a casting? Were the recesses hogged out with a mill? (I’m not sure what processes work with titanium.) Impressive structure.

  6. Engineered parts have always fascinated me, from their inception to production. This is wild! Quite the coffee table. It becomes it’s own conversation piece. Thanks for sharing it!
