We have had so many interesting guests and co-collaborators with the Open Lunar Foundation over the years. As an example, I invited Larry Lessig to come to our SF office to talk about the governance issues of a remote colony, and the possible futures unfolding from the framing constitution and economic system — his area of legal expertise.

This led to some fascinating questions around sovereignty and choices for the early days (~ 10 person colony) versus later on, along the axes of capitalism/socialism, authoritarian/libertarian and direct/representative democracy. As a thought experiment, consider the allocation of essentials, like oxygen, in the early days. Authoritarian socialism to start? Direct democracy at scale?

And should we test competing systems in parallel and expand Paul Romer’s charter cites idea to “charter civilizations” with experiments in better governance, as a stepping-stone to farther-flung off-world civilizations.
