A wonderful keynote and birthday gathering with Steve Huffman at the Goldman PICC (Private Innovative Company Conference).
On stage, he was introduced as Steve Reddit, CEO of Reddit, and rolled right into a fascinating interview:
“We have survived so many self-inflicted wounds. If we could be killed, we would be dead.”
In 2015, our anti-evil efforts were 100% reactive. We only responded when a user reported abuses. I am proud to say that today, we are 80% proactive and algorithmic. The better we get, the more we find.”
“We launched our mobile product in 2016, arguably 9 year late, in typical Reddit form.”
China? “We expect to be banned in China, but we are not banned yet. We are focusing on countries where we are not likely to be banned, and there is plenty of opportunity there.”
“There’s something really engaging about watching people be really passionate about their hobbies.”
“Reddit is like a giant sports bar. You can walk in and not know anybody, but given your common interests and passions, you know you can have a great conversation.”
