Our Planet Atlas Rocket burst apart mid-launch from having a bit too much gun powder, way too early. The 14 second delay ended up being 9 seconds on this very old Aerotech J420 Redline motor, launched with on-board HD Cam, luckily just above harms’ way.
Here is my video medley of this launch, and more screen shots below.
Lifting up over the launch line. That’s me shooting with the long lens in the upper left corner
Boom…. too much gunpowder and a clogging steel wool spark arrester I was testing blasted my airframe in two!
Luckily the camera was on the upper part with parachute. The fin can and motor are falling away here…. And that part was found in the field by the Boy Scouts. Thanks!
For 14 years I have wanted to capture a rocket launch from a camera on my rocket. Not sure why. I gave up after a few years of trying, and I finally got one with my Planet Atlas launch
On the pad, pre-launch:
The rocket HD Camera is in a 3D-printed mount (design by Jamie Claye) midway up.
