“In place of the typical circular halo, I have incised the mandala, or orbital path, of her native planet, Naboo.”

Part of a sneak peek of the Star Wars art for the forthcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. Each of these works were commissioned by George Lucas and are part of his cinematic art collection. As the museum is under construction, these are on display at the new Summit at Skywalker Ranch (where we stayed this weekend).

Here’s a rendering of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which broke ground in Los Angeles in March. Rendering Courtesy of MAD Architects:“The futuristic-looking building isn’t inspired by Star Wars. There are not any intentional references to Star Wars. Star Wars is a film that was set a long time ago in a galaxy far away. One of the reasons George Lucas was attracted to Ma Yansong’s design is because this building couldn’t have been designed a generation ago—couldn’t have been built even 15 years ago. It is absolutely of its moment and looking forward to the future.” — Museum Director Don Bacigalupi

Yeah, yeah. but it sure looks like a Naboo Royal Starship planter conversion to me.

  2. George builds a magnificent timeless $1B museum while Spielberg and Geffen blow the same amount (collectively) on moronic selfish mega-motor yachts (!). Sigh. Still shocked that SF screwed up having this built here…but it will probably have more positive impact by being in LA.
