The maiden flight of our new 3D-printed 4″ fin can…. We thought the fins were too small (the 6″ limit for a symmetrical Makerbot print), but she flew fine on a CTI C-Star 54mm motor.

We will probably switch out for a 6″x9″ bowtie fin can (the asymmetric limit of the Replicator 2) for the next flight with larger motor.

I really love 3D-printed fin cans in rocketry: perfect fin alignment with fillets, integral launch rails, 1 minute assembly time, easy replacement. And I have taken them supersonic over 30 times with simple PLA and never had a fin failure.

  1. Originally a LOC Expediter, she has been reborn (after spending a winter as a Snow Ranch lawn dart) as a Phoenix from the flamesBlastoff!a bit late on motor ejection…. but the elastic shock cord took the shock
