I followed this robo leg around TED2018. To achieve proprioception, they start with a modification to the amputation procedure: the two major muscles in the calf are tethered together at the bottom so that when one contracts, the other is stretched (as normally happens with the ankle in place. This is part of his novel approach to an AMI (Agonist-antagonist Myoneural Interface).

The leg is made up of 24 sensors, 6 microprocessors and muscle-tendon-like actuators
