Face the linear accelerator… on a tour of Intellectual Ventures Labs… with some fun demos… and special guests Jeff Goldblum and Carlos Slim. We started with a demo of hot neutrons in a nuclear pile… rendered in mousetraps, lots of mousetraps. Video and more photos below

One response to “Intellectual Ventures Lab Tour with Nathan Myhrvold”

Gosh we share so many interests! IMG_1833 IMG_1719 Bill Gates is funding Nathan Myhrvold’s Terrapower, a fast breeder reactor that burns a U238 duraflame log for 60 years, with 99% efficiency vs 1% for today’s U235 reactors. No fuel to reload or waste to ship around. Existing nuclear waste could be used as fuel. (From TED2010)

And China is moving forward with a trial; the system may come online by 2025. The competition is cheap natural gas. He hopes they can undercut gas, even without the 40% burden of carbon capture if we made gas clean. (From a dinner with Gates)

“Take nuclear: It takes longer than the length of a patent to get something done. Given all the regulatory steps, will it come out during your lifetime? When people invent something, they generally like to see it happen during their lifetime. Well, if you are not religious, which is one of my problems.” (From: my Techonomy notes)
