Each of the balls on his suit, and the three balls on the virtual camera rig are covered with glass spheres, so they reflect light back at the source. Above us (and visible at the very top of this photo) are a ring of sensors that record the location of all of the glass balls.
Here are my photos from the studio tour.

I first saw these retro-reflector balls at the NASA Ames wind tunnels; all of these little dots become visible in a flash photo, but not with the naked eye.
