The measure of American space launch competitiveness is commercial launch market share, since it is a globally competitive market. From 1980 to 2010, U.S. market share declined from 100% to 0% for all commercial satellite launches, even from U.S. satellite companies. And then SpaceX entered the market.
And a new report just came out tabulating that 2015 was a a banner year for venture investment in space companies, exceeding all prior years combined:
