We came across this gregarious bird while mountain biking over the past few weeks, and finally connected with the owner today. She has the second largest flock in the world, breeding them down the street in anticipation of the need for genetic rescue.

Native to Papua New Guinea, they have a gorgeous iridescent coat, and, as I discovered when trying to imitate their moves, a deep guttural call to fend me off.

  1. Hope they hang on in the wild. Although I’d like to see one on a Ford Crown Victoria 😉

  2. It can be an interesting problem to find the owner, I came across another escapee from this same institution some years ago (also Rara Avis) and finally tracked its home down so it could be returned – and then spent some time taking pictures – see
