Good luck to the NASA Magnetosphere Multiscale (MMS) cluster-launch tomorrow!
We toured the MMS mission control at LASP in Colorado with the Sentinel Mission. Four satellites will fly in formation to study ropes of magnetic reconnection — a process occurs throughout the universe where magnetic fields connect and disconnect with an explosive release of energy, creating space weather events that can interrupt GPS, communications, and the electric power grid.
With MMS launching the space weather forecast, the Sentinel Mission satellite, orbiting near Venus, will take “meteorology” to a whole new level, as it predicts all major meteorite impacts for the next 100 years. Tonight we have a chance of rocky showers and magnetic thunder. =)
