Carlos is the son of Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. Taught linear programming at UNAM. Made $40M by age 26. Now $73B, making him the 2nd richest person in the world.

Rose: How does it feel to be number 2?
Carlos: “Whether I am 1, 2 or 3 does not matter at all.”

“I worry that civilization is changing and politicians are not.”

“I tell my children income is the fruit of the wealth.”

Rose: What is the secret to your success?
“You need to have some brains, courage and character. As a leader, many times you are alone. You need the love of family and friends.”

“Europe is bankrupt. They always spend more than they have.”

“We need a global 3-day work week. It is the only way to solve the problem of unemployment. It will happen. Three days working 11-12 hours per day and retiring at 75, not 60.”

But France has a 35 hour work week and higher unemployment than the U.S. Why? “The U.S. has bigger markets and the government is not bankrupt. The French get more done in 3 days than others do in 5.”

“Solving social problems is more important than winning market share.”

What was your smartest decision? “Getting married.”

“Pessimism is bad for your brain but also leads to mediocrity.”

“Giving is very easy,. Easier than paying taxes.”
