Karla’s new Salsa with 29″ rims make my old school 26s look puny! Her new bike was originally an Xmas gift for our son, but he said “Meh” so we absconded with it. He gets her hand-me-down instead.

The “wrong way, right way” ride was a wonderful combination of technical single track downhill, and a manageable set of climbs, ending with a 1,100-vertical-foot climb straight up.

  1. I was wearing the cool Neil Armstrong shirt that my biking buddy (and photographer here) gave me: IMG_2402The rest of the posse… IMG_2693

  2. I’ll put it on my list…

The bigger wheels increase the center of gravity, so greater chance of falling?

  3. Nope as the frame geometry makes up for that and you ride with saddle, handle-bad and crank shaft in similar positions. But the larger wheels put the wheel mass farther from the hubs, providing a stronger gyroscope effect and inertia. Rocks and bumps give less rolling resistance to a larger wheel. I’m not sure of the source, but it seems like a more stable ride with the larger wheels.

  4. Thanks – makes sense the bigger wheels sure should help over the bumps.

  5. funny, I went with 29s for my 13 yr old son last year, and I am riding it more than him.
