Escape from North Korea

Having just watched “The Interview”, I was struck my Seth Rogan’s desire to tackle a serious topic (but with a classic Seth humor streak). It reminded me of the one North Korean I have photographed, and her poignant interview. Here is Hyeonseo Lee, facing the standing ovation at TED.

She saw her first public execution at age 7. Looking across the border, she wondered why “Everything around me was completely dark at night, except for the sea of lights in China just across the river from my home. I always wondered why they had light and we didn’t.”

To have escaped, and be fluent in English is quite rare. The video tells her story: http://go.ted.com/h78
