   Signage for the bus Massive signage. Tesla bought the billion dollar NUMMI plant for $42M On the tour, with hundreds of Kuka robots scattered about, with names like T1000 and various comic book characters, the guide said "this would be a bad place for the robot uprising" =)

   The tours require staff and an electric train ride like you might expect at Disneyland to cover the shop floor distances. They can’t accommodate the crush of interest from every school, friend of an employee, visiting delegation from overseas, etc., so they offer them to customers who want to pick their car up at the factory. Those customers fly in from all over and still pay the $1,200 delivery fee, so you could translate that as the marginal cost of a tour! My dad found a cool video that came out today of the changes that happened since my last visit, and the Tesla blog post about how the robots are named after comic book characters. I especially like the video there on how they make motors… This is the kind of process innovation that auto companies would not publish for the world to see unless they had the higher goal of catalyzing an industry shift.
