The engines were built by the Soviets back in the 60’s.
Not designed in the 60’s, but built back then for the doomed N-1 program (all flights ended a bit like this one), and refurbished here.

When Doves Fry… I’m also sad to see 26 of Planet Labs‘ Dove satellites become squab….

But it’s a good thing that this debut flight of the Castor 30XL solid upper stage did not ignite midair, like this Delta rocket

  2. one of the launch guys at spacex own(ed) the ford ranger shown burnt out in that video of the delta explosion. I guess that’s what you get for parking in the exclusion zone on launch day.

  3. Nice pyros, did the range safety office push the destruct button or was the rocket that went PFFFT on it’s own??????

  4. Video of this big Antares boom makes an appearance in the recent Everyday Astronaut review of Russian engines, as it was a Russian engine failure to blame.
