via LA Times. From the NASA Administrator’s post this afternoon:
“Today, with the selection of Boeing and SpaceX to be the first American companies to launch our astronauts to the International Space Station, NASA has set the stage for what promises to be the most ambitious and exciting chapter in the history of human space flight.

From day one, the Obama Administration has made it clear that the greatest nation on Earth should not be dependent on other nations to get into space. Thanks to the leadership of President Obama and the hard work of our NASA and industry teams, today we are one step closer to launching our astronauts from U.S. soil on American spacecraft and ending the nation’s sole reliance on Russia by 2017.

The partnership with Boeing and SpaceX promises to give more people in America and around the world the opportunity to experience the wonder and exhilaration of spaceflight – to realize the dream of leaving Earth for even a short time to float above our planet Earth in microgravity and to see the stars and the majestic tapestry of the Milky Way unobstructed by the artificial lights and dust of our atmosphere.

As President Obama has said, “We will not only extend humanity’s reach in space — we will strengthen America’s leadership here on Earth.”

Our destiny is set. Our course is laid out before us. And we are following it. We hope the American people will be inspired to join us on this next great, ambitious leg of humanity’s journey farther into our solar system than ever before.”

  1. Our launches are in the Black Rock Desert, the least light polluted place in America, so we understand the glory of getting away form "the artificial lights and dust of our atmosphere"… Ascent of Rocketeer

  2. super!
that cloying press release however is unlikely to be what the founding fathers had in mind about the executive branch….

  3. Beautiful announcement and place to share =)

  4. [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scleroplex] Understated, but better said than I. Just astounding.

  5. the empty nest writ large… =)

    And then there were two….

  6. wow, didn’t expect to get my news from flickr! btw, my 3 year old son is OBSESSED with rocketry. he knows the saturn, space shuttle stack, soyuz and falcon 9 🙂

  7. I am SO happy to hear that. I get the sense that kids are getting excited about the future anew…

And on the news front, the good news comes in waves…
    From today’s WSJ:

Elon Musk’s space venture could be cleared to launch satellites for the Pentagon by Dec. 1

The planned certification of the Falcon 9 rockets used by Mr. Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, would allow the firm to challenge the near monopoly for national security satellite launches enjoyed since 2006 by a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

"I’m rooting for SpaceX to come into the competition," said Gen. John Hyten, the new head of Air Force Space Command

And in the photo above, Elon happens to be wearing an Air Force cap that my rocket mentor Tom gave him to shield him from the desert sun.

  8. Here is a better photo of Elon and me after the hat exchange proudly displaying three great space brands:

    US Air Force – Defense
    SpaceX – Commercial
Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation – Amateur

My son Josh served our nation in the Air Force Special Forces, who are responsible for all space recovery operations for astronauts and payloads as PJ’s (Pararescue Jumpers).

The hat was a gift to me by my son and I wore it proudly to honor his service to our country. Was also featured in both the Science Channel documentary and the Emmy Award winning PBS documentary you and I did last year.

It has brought me great luck. I hope he enjoys it, as he really liked it and asked if he could keep it.

PJ’s are who gets called, when Delta Force and Navy Seals get into trouble and have a bad day, like in Black Hawk Down..
