This spectacular sight greeted me for my birthday as I awoke this morning after a long sleep. The sunlight reflects off the inside of the distant spheres of watery mist, and then again off the PV panels, glancing beyond the critical angle of reflection. Each water-air boundary reflects only one polarization of light, yet there is enough surviving to present a delightful display for retina and sensitive light sensors… So cool.

I have tried to photograph unusual rainbows for some time, but have never seen something quite like this. As I child, when my Dad first explained how rainbows worked, I wondered if they should form a full “rain circle” if the Earth wasn’t in the way. I finally saw that when up in a helicopter; see sequence below…

  2. Rainbows up and down the coast today.
    Happy Birthday!

  3. I’m happy to see the rainbow arrived on time as I planned!! And that you liked it so much. Looks wonderful. In my planet we use to give rainbows for the birthdays of special friends, but I was not sure if it was going to work here. *relief*

But that’s not all there is to see…

    Happy birthday, amigo!!

Hint: Find your way to the other side of the rainbow, there’s where you will receive the real gift for you. The rainbow is just the banner. The ribbon of the gift. |-)

  4. Happy birthday young guy. C’est à ton tour de te laisser parler d’amour.

  6. best birthday sun ever 🙂
    Happy Birthday!

  7. Happy birthday!

Wow, that is an amazingly good picture of a rainbow! Perfect angle I guess.
I learned about rainbows from Walter Lewin’s physics book and enjoyed remembering about it weeks ago watching this lecture also by him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QVbE_tU2sA

Searching "circular rainbow" I found more amazing rainbow pictures here: http://www.pocketburgers.com/2009_12_23_archive.html

  8. Happy Birthday – enjoy the day.

  9. Thanks y’all.

The shot above was a telephoto, pulling back, you can see the secondary bow:

    IMG_5554

With clues from this guide to rainbows, you can also see the supernumeraries on the inner side of the primary bow (in the zoom photo up top).

"These "supernumerary bows" are an intimation of the limitations of geometric optics for it is totally unable to explain them. To do so we must take account of the wave nature of light." (primer, cool interactive slider showing variation with drop size)

  10. learnt something new today – "supernumerary bows"
    thank you 🙂

  11. great way to wake up on your special day 🙂

  12. Had a pic of a RAINBOW here in town the other day.looked for the POT’o GOLD at the end of the rainbow but only thing we found was the NEW POT SHOP!
