It seemed surreal. The security folks at Clear thought they were pretty cool, with my custom 3D-printed fin can design. TSA ignored them completely but got all distracted by a Mars globe gift. They made me peel off the gift wrap and show them mechanism because they wanted to make sure there was no fluid inside. Rockets OK. Mars globe – almost confiscated.

The embedded hearts in he fins were the perfect nod to the LUV airline. I should have posed with the Southwest Air heart logo on the front cabin wall…

  1. Did the rockets have motors inside?

My uncle once tried to take an albatross on an airplane and had fun with security.

  2. Wow… They let you on with rockets…

  3. Musician friend of mine (member of a European national symphony orchestra) tried to board with a very expensive oboe – the airline wanted to carry it as checked baggage "it looked like it could be used as a bazooka".

  4. @jitze1942 – nice. Similar to the TSA in Reno telling me my rocket motor casing could be used as a billy club. Harumph! I tried to head off their scrutiny of my rocket wreckage in my luggage by disclosing up front at luggage check-in that everything I have is covered in spent gunpowder and rocket propellant, and how can I make sure my bags will make it – carry on, or checked? "Oh, we aren’t checking for that" they told me.

@John Carr – good question, and no, that would be illegal (I don’t joke about that, even in TSA lines). Propellant went by DOT 1.4 ground transport separately.

I just went though LAX security today, and they had five body-armored police with machine guns and dogs to welcome guests at the front door. The killer app for drones, IMHO, is to enable the abolishment of the TSA security checks altogether… Here’s one way.

  5. militarised police = total waste of space

  6. @scleroplex The expanded absurdity of the TSA model of all need to be dealt with equally likely as terrorists, all communications potentially need to be monitored and therefore recorded, presumption of guilt as justification for fascist terror, where to begin?
The assumptions here are as usual: technology, science and intelligence are your tools of salvation – conveniently leaving unpleasant realities of things like money, power, criminality along with larger problems of evil and stupidity out of it.
Skipping ahead, the conclusion here has been more rapid accurate tech means of id is better for solving these fascist tyranny of the many as all equally likely as criminals/terrorists drunk drivers, and so on.
The fact that a SJ and friends, who have drawers full of all types of RFID access cards, high tech tokens, and more along with access to labs and tech capable of the most Bond and Bond villain-esq gadgets, including experimental high explosives and WMD tech, the fact they get put thru this nonsense should raise some interesting questions and ironic observations.
