Up on deck

A historic photo of the USS Hornet in action. This Apollo 12 capsule splashed down just 2 miles away from the ship:

Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins spent their first 65 hours back on Earth in this vessel, and were allowed to emerge once scientists were sure they were not infected with "moon germs”.

I saw the Apollo 11 mobile quarantine unit at the
Smithsonian
given that they were inside spacesuits, it’s their capsule that should have been quarantined….
Great visual – just chillin’ after walking on the moon…
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/26274943@N02] — it’s awesome! Sorry if I did not comment sooner. As for contamination, Apollo 12 found the bacteria Streptococcus mitts in a piece of foam from inside the TV camera of Surveyor 3, after resting 2.5 years on our desolate moon. The quarantine policy covered the people inside the capsule… versus the moon rocks… or capsule.
As for the oceans, "The ocean hosts a stunningly–and surprisingly–diverse menagerie of microorganisms, according to a massive genetic study published today."

those chairs in vennettaj’s photo are très chic 🙂
germs are vital to life
people who keep their homes 99% germ free are seriously harming their children
and the 12 lunar walkers broke the COLOR CAMERA by pointing it into the sun, burnt it out and they brought it back from the moon for inspection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtBMAMO11e8
Major Doh! moment there.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/scleroplex] — Yes, I was just reviewing my oral microbiome… Lot’s of good stuff in there. =)
As for the fears, I think the NASA planners were raised on War of the Worlds… and Andromeda Strain came out in 1969
Yes, looking at that photo…

There is a USS Hornet cap on the table, Neil has his Beats by Dre, and the chairs look to have overlays on airliner seats.
Here is a photo I took inside the trailer on the Hornet, with the STEREO SYSTEM on top

with Mitchell’s signature. Apollo 14 was the last mission to put the astronauts in quarantine.
The seat belts and ash trays also caught my eye.
Looking down the hallway in back to the bunk bedroom

You were about a mile from TW’s house! I’ve been on the Hornet, but during the day. Cool ship, with some great planes on it. The previous Hornet (sunk in 1942) was the carrier in the Doolittle Raid. (I hear there’s a brand new Target store nearby, which they built after checking for nuclear waste from the old Navy base.)
