A historic photo of the USS Hornet in action. This Apollo 12 capsule splashed down just 2 miles away from the ship:
    A12 Hornet recovery
Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins spent their first 65 hours back on Earth in this vessel, and were allowed to emerge once scientists were sure they were not infected with "moon germs”.

  2. No bids to the GSA yet on the BACKUP Mobile Quarantine FAC for the Office LOBBY? looked like a modded AIRSTREAM travel trailer, what a way to come home!

  3. Great ship! She brings happy memories.

  4. Yes, near, far, wherever you are

  5. given that they were inside spacesuits, it’s their capsule that should have been quarantined….

  6. Not for the entire time, but your point remains, their quarantine policy was a bit absurd (to assume the human carrier is needed yet that they could somehow get infected from a land with no humans)

  7. They were worryied about the moon viruses and germs 🙂
How was the experience on the Hornet?

  8. If any MOON BUGS were brought back by the ASTROS< the worst medium to be spread by is the SEAS and guess where they landed, how ironic that 3-4 yrs later NIXON would be done in by another bug……………. this time by the MISSING WH TAPES

  9. Nice colors reflected on the water. Good series. How did you like the missile launch that I sent? And, are we going to see you on H2 or Discovery – they are broadcasting a show on amateur rocket enthusiasts.

  10. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson] Capsule landed in water – sea water has a cleaning effect and would perhaps dilute any contamination on the outside. Also the heat from re-entry might just burn away contamination.

  11. Great visual – just chillin’ after walking on the moon…

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/26274943@N02] — it’s awesome! Sorry if I did not comment sooner. As for contamination, Apollo 12 found the bacteria Streptococcus mitts in a piece of foam from inside the TV camera of Surveyor 3, after resting 2.5 years on our desolate moon. The quarantine policy covered the people inside the capsule… versus the moon rocks… or capsule.

As for the oceans, "The ocean hosts a stunningly–and surprisingly–diverse menagerie of microorganisms, according to a massive genetic study published today."

  12. those chairs in vennettaj’s photo are très chic 🙂

    germs are vital to life
people who keep their homes 99% germ free are seriously harming their children

  13. and the 12 lunar walkers broke the COLOR CAMERA by pointing it into the sun, burnt it out and they brought it back from the moon for inspection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtBMAMO11e8

  14. Major Doh! moment there.

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/scleroplex] — Yes, I was just reviewing my oral microbiome… Lot’s of good stuff in there. =)

As for the fears, I think the NASA planners were raised on War of the Worlds… and Andromeda Strain came out in 1969

    Yes, looking at that photo…
    Apollo 11 Chilling in trailer
There is a USS Hornet cap on the table, Neil has his Beats by Dre, and the chairs look to have overlays on airliner seats.

Here is a photo I took inside the trailer on the Hornet, with the STEREO SYSTEM on top

with Mitchell’s signature. Apollo 14 was the last mission to put the astronauts in quarantine.

The seat belts and ash trays also caught my eye.

  15. Can you imagine coming back from the serene beauty and triumph of space travel and being greeted by a greasy slime bag like Nixon? Talk about Buzz Kill.

  16. NIXON in ‘July ’69 was KING …………….better than ELVIS ……Watergate was 35 months in the future and Nixon had a plan to end Vietnam with Kissinger opening CHINA.wonder if he had a DELOREAN from Doc Brown would things be different ?

  17. You were about a mile from TW’s house! I’ve been on the Hornet, but during the day. Cool ship, with some great planes on it. The previous Hornet (sunk in 1942) was the carrier in the Doolittle Raid. (I hear there’s a brand new Target store nearby, which they built after checking for nuclear waste from the old Navy base.)

  18. I just found a tribute left for the Apollo 11 CM on the Hornet, written by Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins. From LIFE Magazine, Aug 22, 1969:
