Phobos is the closest moon to its planet, orbiting Mars in 7.5 hours, faster than Mars itself which spins with a 24.6 hour day.

The surface of this small moon has been pounded into powder by eons of meteoroid impacts, some of which started landslides that left dark trails marking the steep slopes of giant craters. There is incredible detail when viewed at full size. So it’s soft and low, in stark contrast to Hyperion.

Russia has made three failed attempts to land on Phobos; I visited the most recent spacecraft โ€” Phobos-Grunt โ€” in Russia prior to launch (below).

  1. My visit to the "JPL of Russia" with a nice vodka lunch on premise…

The Phobos photo was taken my the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), and I was a bit of a fanboy…

  2. the start of a great over-the-moon set

  3. Original size oufff and I kind of liked the darker side and probably Galileo would LOVE this photo.

  4. Yeah… We live in a golden age of exploration… Imagine those historical figures in astronomy exposed to this decade’s images… Just having a still image to study was beyond them… without photography, they had to see it in person, with crude telescopes at night, while tracking against the Earth’s rotation… unable to directly share the marvels they discovered…

  5. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson] Just imagine how many dissertations will come from this data – it’s a boon, not just for our own era of exploration (exciting enough), but for the future of understanding and science in general. So good it makes me ambivalent about manned spaceflight.

  6. Phobos and Deimos very interesting. It is a great exploration.
    Amazing shot

  7. Excellent shot – many options come to mind –

  8. wonderfull!!
    wishing you much success!

  9. nice – did you buy a new lens? ๐Ÿ˜‰
(I suppose it must be the new Canon EF 90000000mm f/0.1L IS if my calculations are correct…)

  10. "That’s no moon!"

  11. cue ominous music….

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/obskura] โ€” Just the 2300mm… The trick is to get close to the subject…

  12. and what a trick that is :-))

  13. Funny, close to the subject ๐Ÿ™‚ Steve: did you start your trip to Mars? ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. funnily enough (atmospheric distortion aside), it might actually be easier and cheaper to get close to the subject rather than trying to build a 90km focal length camera lens monster… ๐Ÿ™‚
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/87336872@N03] maybe Elon made some progress recently on his primary priority… ๐Ÿ˜‰ can’t see any greenhouses yet though…

  15. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/obskura] โ€” yes! That is the inspiration behind Planet

  16. Maybe if the Russians had less vodka for lunch, they would have more luck landing on Phobos…

I think manned space exploration is a waste of money and effort, given our current technology. We evolved to survive on earth. Why spend the money it takes to fight that battle on another planet? Metal boxes are a lot tougher than we are, and they don’t need a toilet. We should do just enough astronaut training to keep our feet wet, and then revisit manned spaceflight in 50 years when our technology makes it worth the investment.
