This is the machine that draws the PLA filament into 1.75mm diameter thread would onto spools. The horizontal bath on the right is at 125°C and allows the filament to polymerize slowly before air cooling on the rollers in the center. Photo essay of the manufacturing flow below…

  1. The PLA pellets melt off to the right and the liquid pumps through two molds, at right angles at the bottom of the frame here:

    and then the filament is drawn through the long bath described above.

    The Replicator 2 (one-head, PLA plastic) and 2X (two-head, ABS plastic) assembly begins with the print head:

    Final assembly… the process flow reminded me of "Chinamation" devoid of robots, so far…
