First sight from a Dove satellite… so beautiful.. the gossamer glow of our blue marble below.

Planet Labs came out of stealth mode this morning. They were formerly called Cosmogia, hence the writing and logo on this cool memento.

More photos and how they were captured, below…

  1. Here we are up in the foothills of Stanford, just after that huge dish tracked the Dove from horizon to horizonIMG_9385And inside the trailer below, the excitement is palpable…IMG_9357And here is the very first image they pulled from the other Dove (they had two different orbits going at the same time)Planet Labs first photoI cropped down to a portion of the total frame. It is particularly interesting because the Google Earth image of the exact same place in Oregon is several months old, and quite a bit of deforestation took place in the interim.

I got to drive up for a photo with the windmills for the final frontier… 🙂 morethese are two of my favorite thingsAnd here is a sequence of photos about the company and the early days…

  2. Met a founder of Skybox recently – do they compete directly?

  3. Mike – heh. Skybox was like the minicomputer to the Planet iPhone. They eventually got acquired by Google, who spent another ~$billion developing it.. and ultimately, spun it out and gave it to Planet!
