To have made it, and be fluent in English is quite rare.

Here is Hyeonseo Lee, facing the standing ovation to her poignant TED Talk.

She saw her first public execution at age 7. Looking across the border, she wondered why
“Everything around me was completely dark at night, except for the sea of lights in China just across the river from my home. I always wondered why they had light and we didn’t.”

Her story resonated with what my parents experienced separately escaping the Russian occupation of Estonia at the end of WW II.

  4. Interesting story. It would be interesting to hear of your parents’ story of escape from occupied Estonia. I am sure that there would be a book that could be written about each escape – you should do that for them and so many others.

  5. both of them need better footwear 🙂

  8. Hi Steve.
Just borrowed a few of your Rocket photos for a "montage" with Photo-Shop. I remember you telling me I could. And I want to thank you for it and be sure I will mention their sources when I post the end result on FLICK. I will also send you a copy. I think I will call the work DEEP IMPACT. You’ll know why when you see it.
Thanks again and do have the most pleasant week Steve.

P.S. yes, do give us a story about your family. I am pretty sure my wife Epp (also from Estonia) will just love to read it too.

Family stories… I do mean to share sometime… A 544-page book just came out on my great grandfather… and there may be another one in the works on his wife… and there is a lot written about his brother, but I want my parents to capture more about their memories and harrowing escapes. My Dad was on the last boat out…

  10. Thanks a lot for these links. COOL.
And I may even use this photo if you don’t mind.

  11. and meanwhile, back on North Korea, Elon was tweeting about them as well:

    "There’s crazy, there’s batsh*t crazy, then there’s North Korea crazy… "

  12. N. Korea feels like it is approaching a tipping point as instability of its economy and insecurity of its new leader combine. Hope it plays out as well as possible as soon as possible…

  14. Having just watched "The Interview", I was struck my Seth Rogan’s desire to tackle a serious topic, for himself, and for the protagonists (but with a classic Seth humor streak).

  15. why don’t we flood North Korea with DVD’s players, the complete SONY/PIXAR/Universal Film and TV catalog plus free blue jeans and Cell Phones for all the masses there? Hey it worked in the SOviet Bloc countries in the 80’s, Y not there?
