The Buran looks remarkably like the Space Shuttle from the outside, but then I found this schematic from Russia. It’s freaky similar on the inside, from the flight deck to the middeck to the payload bay. Even the green metal. =)

I added mouse-over notes above to comare features to the Shuttle (which i photographed extensively from the inside to build the VR tour now on display at CSC).

And you can see the huge full-size version of the Molniya Buran diagram here.

  2. Great minds work in parallel paths… or it’s just cheaper to steal the plans… I suppose that might be a two way street. 8-o

  3. Here is a collection of photos of Buran from the glory days… in contrast to today… in disrepair:

  4. One would like to say "optimized design" and all that converging on a solution, but this was shameless. P.S. Steve, when are you gonna take your Twitter account live?

  5. I am taking the Silent Bob approach to Twitter.

What similarity?? Here’s a defense by the Russians
    Comparison
    Energia makes the unusual claim:
"Envisioned before the American shuttle, yet only built some years after Columbia blasted off into space, the Buran-Energia project was one of the largest, most ambitious and expensive space programs ever attempted in history."

  6. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson] Oh Boo… Chris Sacca would be so disappointed. 😉

  7. So… the US copied the Buran design before the USSR could build it? I hadn’t considered that… 😉

  8. Shuttle design finalized in JAN 1972 during NIXON ADM, seems a hoot the Russians always claimed better faster and first when all it seems it is a direct rip off of the ROCKWELL DESIGN history.nasa.gov/stsnixon.htm Now I wonder what China can do with this type of STS with unlimited funds and resources ???

  9. I wouldn’t be in the least surprised if the KGB had the NASA covered like a jimmy hat. Their successors probably still do.

  10. I took this photo of the Buran Seat and Space Suit recently at the Air and Space Museum in Sinsheim Germany.

  11. Sorry, but Soviet Space Shuttle..

  12. Good point. I changed the title. The design is Soviet. The diagram comes from NPO Molinya which is a Russian entity today.

  13. Here is a vintage photo from a recent Russian space artifact auction in Paris:

  14. All it took was a few of these kits bought from a NYC Toys R Us in early 80’s by a Russian Diplomat, sent to a Swiss or German engineering firm to upscale the kit into workable drawings and the rest is history, still am amzed they had engines on it for atmospheric flight ……………. http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/builds/rm/build_rm_5904.shtml

  15. [https://www.flickr.com/photos/15752486@N07] — and here is the escape handle that would go between the knees: Buran Buran I also have a Buran flight deck control panel that I need to post.

  16. and a bunch more comparison photos here at Popular Mechanics.
