His classic smile from 1961, suited up for the X-15 rocket plane flight.

Neil Armstrong’s first space shots were in the X-15, before he joined the astronaut corps in 1962.

On flight 51, Armstrong hit Mach 5.3 and 207,500 feet of altitude, but bounced off the atmosphere on reentry and almost ended up at LAX (full story, video snippet)
