From WIRED today: “A private enterprise named the Golden Spike Company announced today that they have plans to fly manned crews to the moon and back for a price of $1.5 billion per flight by 2020. It seems a bit unbelievable that a private company can recreate Apollo at an order of magnitude lower cost.”

It reminds me of my earlier flickr post on my lunar orbit dreams, specifically:

Since the moon has no atmosphere, it presents a unique orbital opportunity – we could fly incredibly close to the surface while staying in lunar orbit. Apollo X dropped to an orbit 47K feet off the surface – like a private jet altitude over Earth.

If the goal is tourism, you could go much lower, and with no landing, it could have a downward facing window optimized for the views. I would want to figure out the tradeoff of orbital altitude and surface speed — skimming a thousand feet over the highest crater (Zeppelin altitudes) would be amazing, but might be dizzying. But, since the moon has 1/6 the mass of Earth, the orbital speeds at any given altitude are about 1/6 as fast… so it could be slow and low, that is the tempo… =)

Why not land? The cost and complexity just explodes, as the Russians discovered in the space race. For a new tourist activity, so does the risk. And to what benefit? With the full Apollo stack with EV on the moon, yes, you could cover some distance, but not as much as you can see in orbit. Bouncing around on foot just does not grab me as an essential first person experience. And, moon gravity and Mars gravity is easily simulated on the parabolic planes if that’s the key attraction.

And all that weight and design constraint would likely tradeoff with the window-optimized design. I would rather spend more time in orbit, at various heights, than attempt a landing.

I do wonder about a spacewalk. These EVA activities are a much easier engineering challenge, and might not tradeoff with the earlier goals. Michael Collins marveled at his EVA in Earth orbit:

I am in the cosmic arena, the place to gain a celestial perspective; it remains only to slow down long enough to capture it, even a teacup will do, will last a lifetime below.

On the Apollo lunar missions, the EVAs occurred on the trip back from the moon (to remove film from the scientific bay for example) but not in lunar orbit. Imagine a tethered space walk soaring over the lunar surface…

    As for the launch plans, it reminds me of the Russian Zond EOR (Earth Orbit Rendezvous) to assemble a stack prior to TLI:

  8. Are they expecting to fill those two seats, or is this a creative way to attract attention, and maybe funding, for a more conventional commercial space operation?

    It feels like the front page item on that holiday gift catalogue. They don’t expect anyone to actually order the life size Ferrari molded out of dark chocolate but sure, if someone came through with the $235,000 they’d move forward and figure out how to do it…

    (It also makes me wonder how I’d spend a $750,000,000 "fulfill a lifelong dream"/"experience of a lifetime" budget. I’d be content to "just" visit the ISS. That would leave plenty of money to buy back the film rights to the "Hitch Hiker’s Guide" series and shoot it as an epic Lord Of The Rings-style trilogy…

My only objection is that there are so many important things to spend money and talent on, things that would improve the life of the millions of people living on a dollar a day all over the world, that spending all that money and talent on flying billionaire tourists to the moon seems a bit frivolous, though not as expensive, harmful or frivolous as say, invading Iraq.

    I beg to differ. Any money spent on endeavours like this does not disappear or get burnt. On the contrary: Challenges like this mobilize money and inspire talent. They create opportunity for development of skills and technology, and ultimately improvement of lives. In the long run for the human race, is development of tools for a robust space transportation industry more, or less, important than the construction of (say) another a water and sewage treatment system in a developing country?

  12. @imager I’d like to agree with you, I’m certainly not of the school that believes that the only useful thing the space race produced was Teflon, but I think at this point we are absolutely dripping with money, skills and technology, but sorely lacking in similar political talent to direct that sort of money, skills and technology toward solving or ameliorating all the human suffering around us. The idea seems to be to leave all that to Bill Gates and his foundation.

Seems completely believable to me, the R&D that had to happen to be first and prove it can be done is always more than the followers have to spend. Plus you have 40+ years of technology development in every field (materials, electronics…) to leverage off of (much of which was developed, or at least inspired, by the original moon shot).

    I think they vastly overestimate the cost by looking back rather than forward. What if LEO launch costs drop 10x again with reusability… Perhaps it’s like the human genome sequencing race, where the government plods along for 10 years, and Venter looks to Moore’s law and enters at the finish line, completing half of the sequence in the last 6 months.
