I like the quiet calm of the night sky, punctuated by the piercing streak of a night launch. Photos from this evening.

Our posse had three successful launches by day, and two by night… photos below.

  1. My first night bird was a rebuilt LOC IV flying on a H120 Redline:

And then I probably set my night altitude record with the Nike Smoke on a J449 Blue Streak:

The dual rings of 24 LEDs blinking in synchrony were barely visible drifting under parachute against the star field, and we were briefly misled by a satellite streaking overhead. We had RF tracking as a backup to the visual tracking, and that helped find all of the airframe segments as they unscrewed at about 50 ft. and fell the last part separately. I built a really cool removable nosecone bulkhead that holds battery racks, flight computer and LED sequencers, but it needs a bit of work to lock down the "removable" features during flight recovery. =)

  2. The third photo is my favorite one! A night dream of stars.

  3. Yes! I was originally going to call it fire dancer.

  4. Indeed, may we add "Native american fire Dance"
    was it blue moon?
