Hey, that is Dan Martins Ridge Runner P51D. He kept it at Holister until he sold it last year to a guy in Minnesota. He use to bring it to Reno for races against our F8 Bearcat Rarebear. This was before my Rocket career. I miss the sound of Ridge Runner over my house in Aptos as he flew for lunch at HMB.
One comment: The P51 when it first came out as the 51A with the Allison V12 was a dog and death trap. It also had no visibility in Dogfights and was a sitting duck as it had gravity fed carbs that would stall the engine when inverted or climbing. Its spare fuel tank behind the pilot also tended to ground loop during landings giving it the nickname as flying coffins. The Merlin extended its range for bomber coverage and the new carbs coupled with the bubble canopy improved its visibility and made it feared by German pilots in the 51D form. Still no match for the F8 and the Seafury. The Russians copied it in the form of the Yak 11 and used it to terrorize rhe eastern front. My friend Bert Zaccaria I think still imports them. He has a VC firm near you. Eddie Andreni in HMB has a red one that is awesome. I almost bought one but instead started building rockets instead.
Had heard of a sub and torpedo that used air released near front in attempt to lower friction with water so as to increase speed underwater. But something like your image happened instead, with so much air around hull; buoyancy was lower and it kept going down instead of direction intended.
