…and astronauts. Quite the party. It even had Buzz (Aldrin).

Hitched a ride back with Virgin Galactic (Thanks George!) This great photo by Robbie of Cosmogia sure caught the sparkle in our eyes.

The landing was a spectacular ballet of audacious technology, choreographed with multi-stage landers and two satellites passing by at just the right time overhead. We should be seeing more imagery and data from this landing than any that came before.

Here’s the video I took leading up to this photo.

and a little fun singing with him last year.

    Yes We Can, will.i.am

  2. DID’nt look like 7 MINUTES of TERROR to us as the media and JPL Hyped, everything worked to perfection and there should be a PAY PAL account for the SKY CRANE Builders to crank them out pronto for more future landers………….oh yeah, purge Curi’s computer of EDL and Cruise data prior to roving before it locks up like one did in ’04
And OPPY being the trooper it is stood down for a few days ……………….. http://www.planetary.org/blogs/guest-blogs/a-j-s-rayl/20120803-m...

  3. And here it comes… MRO passed directly overhead just as MSL landed

  4. Science is the new cool. =)

But seriously, the relative news blitz about the Olympics seems like such an misplaced emphasis on what will eventually fade into an irrelevant footnote in history… some ritualized glorification of tribal skills carried forth from a bygone era.

Meanwhile, those boffins at JPL sure keep the fun flowing…
Look what the Martian hot wheels will leave in Morse Code

  5. For the life of me I can’t understand why this isn’t in 72 point bold font on every news site on the internet today. Sadly, it isn’t… a blurb here and there.

  7. I felt compelled to go look that up too. thanks.

Just noticed this hopeful tidbit… and hope it can be sustained:

" The scope of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, its impressive scientific arsenal, and yes, the seemingly crazy SkyCrane landing system have generated the kind of buzz that allowed #Curiosity and #MSL to finally out-hashtag the #Olympics on Twitter." —WIRED

  8. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I have no issue with London… and if pyro rockets are involved, all the better. =)

My disdain is for spectator sports, wherever they may be. What a colossal waste of human attention. Watching track and field shouldn’t be that different than watching farmers in the field.

Meanwhile, Obama left his birthday party on Sunday in Chicago for a jaunt to the Iowa farmers. He called JPL today and said:

“It’s really mind-boggling what you’ve been able to accomplish.”

“If you do make contact with Martians, please let me know right away. I’ve got a lot of other things on my plate, but I suspect that that will go to the top of the list. Even if they’re just microbes, it will be pretty exciting.”

“It does sound like NASA has come a long way from the white shirt, black dark-rimmed glasses and the pocket protectors. You guys are a little cooler than you used to be.”

“This is the kind of thing that inspires kids across the country. They’re telling their moms and dads they want to be part of a Mars mission — maybe even the first person to walk on Mars.”

“Really what makes us best as a species is this curiosity that we have and this yearning to discover and know more, and push the boundaries of knowledge. And you are perfect examples of that, and we couldn’t be more grateful to you.”

  9. Heh, reminds me that when it comes to Armstrongs, Neil >> Lance. =)

P.S. cross posting the other photo collection from this magical night at JPL
Photos from JPL for Curiosity Landing

  10. Love those shirts and to see how much he has grown since then!
