At the base of Meteor Crater rest the rusting remains of an early foray in asteroid mining for the precious iron and nickel that the booming U.S. railway industry valued more than gold in these parts.

Today, we might look for the Platinum Group Metals (PGMs like palladium, iridium, and platinum) that are used as catalysts and average $1,500 per ounce.

Platinum and the PGMs are so expensive because they only come from asteroids. All of the Earth mines are centered on historic meteor impacts like this one, and given the fracture on impact, the precious metals exist in densities of 1 part per billion at a good site.

Why is this? During the Earth’s formation, all of these heavy PGM elements settled by gravity within the molten core of our planet. The only remains near the surface are those that arrived much later, from asteroid impacts.

    The meteorites themselves are striking… and tell an interesting story:

    The first is from the moon; the second was popularized as kryptonite in Superman Returns.

    The beauty on the left below is 4.2 billion years old and is the mantle+core mix of a proto-planet, smashed into oblivion during the formation of our solar system, and crystallized in zero-g like the one above, in a way that could not be reproduced on Earth:

  3. The PGM’s only come from asteroids? I was not aware of that. Fascinating. I had my wife’s engagment ring made of palladium and a Tanzanite: @Toby

  5. PGM’s only from asteroids? Sorry if I am missing something…but there seem to be many sources of PGMs around the globe, and most were most certainly NOT asteroidal in origin:

    Maybe I am misunderstanding the comments above. Did PGMs NOT originate like gold etc. in "r" or "s" process supernova events? Only subsequently produced through a process that precipitates asteroids?

    Maybe the above meant "commercially viable sources" of PGMs?

    "Most of the gold (and other heavy elements) that are present today in the Earth’s crust and mantle were delivered to Earth by asteroid impacts during the late heavy bombardment."

    the earth’s molten core is iron plus minor nickel similar to the composition of meterorites from the asteroid belt

    most of the terrestrial nickel deposits and mines around the world ascended in large ultramafic intrusions from the mantle

    to take this full circle with your Meteor Crater prospecting, the only large asteroid impact being mined is the Sudbury mining district, which would be another great multivariant science & technology place waiting for you to explore
