This was just bizarre. I went to the Tesla test drive event this afternoon, and this guy I met there kept pointing to his fire-engine red Ferrari off in the distance.

Since I do not intend to ever buy a gas-burner again, I must not have seemed very interested. Then he said: “I just bought the Ferrari two hours ago. I drove it here. Want to go check it out?”

That piqued my curiosity. He just handed me the keys, and went off to test drive the Tesla Model S.

That was some trust. He came back with a big smile, and he and his brother bought a Sedan.

  2. Steve, how was your experience in the Ferrari? All biases aside, how did the acceleration and the combustive OMPH / RAWR *feel*?

  3. Funny that you posted the interior of a car…..so did I but what a difference in the finition touch …wow. Have a good week Steve.

  4. Did you drive past the computer history museum today? I think I recognized you!

  5. Yes… Went to Quiznos across the street from CHM, and then the theater to see PIXAR’s Brave in 3D.

At Tesla today, they told me that they receive 3 to 4 pictures per day of my car out and about. Spooky.

  6. yes, a beautiful and unique car like this (model S) attracts a lot of attention…

  7. mucho approbation on your preference of automobile.

of note, i did find the location of the ferrari’s digital screen very interesting. to the left of the steering wheel vs. what conventionally (across makes/models) seems to be more centralized to the interior — to the right of the steering wheel.

  8. I live in 850 sq/ft house. 1 Ferrari is the cost of 12 of my Nissan Versas. When will people stop with this overwhelming greed? Come stay with me for a month to see the reality of how some 280 other million are living in this country.

  9. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/rleephotos2010] — Oh, don’t get me wrong. I have no interest in Ferraris. For me, it’s like seeing a gilded carriage from a bygone era, an artifact of absurd extremes.

But keep in mind that the blue car has a total cost of ownership less than a Ford Taurus. The next generation should be more affordable still.

And, it sounds like you are quite wealthy.

I am much more interested in the 200 million people who are not burning gas because an electric vehicle is cheaper than the alternatives:

Where in the world is this?

  10. There’s also a Porsche in the right-hand mirror…quite a festival of expensive autos. I was about to scoff at the lack of a gear-shift lever but I checked the Wikipedia and found that "it is the first mainstream model to not be offered with a manual transmission." The computer does a better job than the operator, I suppose.

Steve — the TCO angle is a good one (assuming it is true), although it doesn’t help those who don’t have the money to lay down up front.

  11. Right you are. When the lease program starts, that should address the upfront cash problem, and it will have the advantage of rolling all of the math into a monthly lease figure that can be compared across vehicles.

  12. Way to go with choosing a car of the year!
